Fish-To-Wealth
Fish farming in Nigeria is a relatively new
industry and therefore is faced with many enormous challenges such as sourcing
for funds, marketing of fish produced, technical-know-hows etc. This therefore,
necessitate forming of a body of fish farmers into a group called “Fish- To-
Wealth” Cooperative and Multipurpose Society ( Fish-To-Wealth (CAMS) )
Fish-To-Wealth CAMS was founded in the year 2009,
under the able leadership of Dr, Taiwo A. Ahmed, who is the current president
of the association.
The association is duly registered with the Lagos
State Ministry of Agriculture and cooperatives and is undergoing the process of
Incorporation with the Corporate Affairs Commission.
Our members are from different works of life
including engineers, doctors, retired military officers, accountants, young
graduates and school leavers interested in farming fish.
Fish-To-Wealth has several different commodities
interest groups such as fingerlings production, grow-outs/table-size fish
production, Brood-stock, processing which includes Fish smokers, Marketing
groups etc. We are also looking and inviting people in different communities in
the nation who can form themselves into CIG`s of 8-10 people to join with us,
i.e. register their CIG`s with Fish-To -Wealth and there by benefit from our
programs. Further inquiries on this should be addressed to our secretariat.
Fish-To-Wealth is involved in various programs of
the World Bank such as:
1. Fadama and CADP
2. Federal government agriculture programs
through CBN and Ministry of Agriculture
3. Lagos State government agriculture programs
4. International donors and philanthropic
foundations or organizations.
Fish-To-Wealth is also undergoing projects in the
area of feed production (pelletized and extruded feeds) and in cold-room
freezing of catfish.
We have a publication called "Profitable
Fish Farming". We are using this opportunity to invite well-meaning and
serious fish farmers to join our association, so that together we can make this
country great in the area of fish cultivation.

Many of the popular tropical aquarium cat fishes originate from
South and Central America, Africa and Asia. Most are rather drably colored,
mainly because they need good camouflage to avoid predation. As they usually
frequent the bottom, the ideal colors are brown and black. Many have poor sight,
as they are often nocturnal or live in silt-laden waters. To compensate for
this, catfishes have developed barbells, which recovered in taste receptors.
Barbells may be long and used for hunting, basin the pummeled or, as in the
Cordovans catfishes, short and used to burrow and tease their way into the
gravel to detect food or insects. Some catfishes scavenge at the bottom for
tasty morsels, others amendatory swimmers that feed mainly on insect larvae.
Large predatory species hunt for small live fish, a few feed on fruit and seeds
and some of the most bizarre species are parasitic - even to the extent of
feeding on other catfishes.
